The Book of Eli

Directed by The Hughes Brothers
Starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Jennifer Beal

Plot

Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on a journey for 30 years, walking west across America after a cataclysmic war that turned the earth into a total wasteland. The world has become a lawless civilization where people must kill or be killed. The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun.

Review
I loved this film.  The cinematography and the use of filters and colour to portray a barren, godless, lawless society was very impressive.  The parched earth was one of the stars of this film - unforgiving and compelling.

Denzel Washington is a man on a mission who seems to be unstoppable in his trek across America.  The violence in this film is so fast and so crisp it seems almost like a mirage.  Blink and you miss it, but the results of it are unmistakeable.  The de-evolution of society has been covered well in films of the past decade, including Children of Men, 28 Days Later and even V for Vendetta.  The veneer of politeness is stripped away and lawlessness is rife.

Into this lawlessness steps Gary Oldman as the feared leader of a 'town'.  He is older - he has survived the original cataclysm - and is looking for a book.  He has gangs out looking for this book, all of whom are illiterate.  This slow search changes when The Walker, Eli, arrives in the town.

I don't want to give away anymore of the plot, as it really is something that you should experience.  So go, see this movie, and let me know what you think of it!
