No Strings Attached

Directed by Ivan Reitman
Starring  Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Kline

Plot

A guy and girl try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it's not long before they learn that they want something more.   Well, technically he wants more and she runs a mile.  An inverted romcom for the third millenium.

Review
I can't really get a handle on Natalie Portman.  For years she was the darling of the indie set with films like Garden State, Closer and V for Vendetta.  And then she wins an Oscar for Black Swan.  And she does a sloppy romcom with Ashton Kutcher (of all people!) and then she stars in Thor.  She is all over the shop.  And then I remember she was also in the Star Wars Prequels.  So her being all over the shop is not a new thing.

The stars in these movies never have the mundane jobs - they are no medical receptionist and delivery driver.  Natalie Portman plays a doctor and Ashton Kutcher works as an assistant on a television show (not dissimilar to Glee).

What works in this movie is the awkwardness between the two characters Adam and Emma as one falls and the other doesn't.  Oh!  And Kevin Kline as Kutcher's sleazy father dating his bimbo ex-girlfriend.  Makes me laugh just thinking about it.  Kline plays this with ease.

This doesn't break new ground (I don't think anyone actually expects that of romcoms these days), but it is enjoyable enough to watch on DVD.
